Cystoscopy is a test in which an endoscope is
inserted through the urine passage in the penis.
This is done to check for any abnormality in the urethra, prostate, bladder
neck and the urinary bladder.
How
is it done?
This is done either under local anesthesia or
general anesthesia. It can be done in an Out-Patient setting is done under local
anesthesia and in the Operation Room setting is done under general anesthesia. A
cystoscope is a metal tube measuring about 5-7 mm in diameter with a lens at
one end. It is inserted and the above organs are inspected. The procedure takes
about 5 minutes. At the end of the procedure, the patient can go home
immediately or after the effects of anesthesia wears off.
Why
is cystoscopy done?
It is done to evaluate the following conditions:
· Hematuria or blood in the urine
· Obstructive urinary symptoms
· Irritative urinary symptoms
· Recurrent urinary infections
· Surveillance of cancers of bladder or urethra
· Enlarged prostate
· Follow-up in stricture urethra
· Ureteric problems like reflux or obstruction
What are the complications of cystoscopy?
There are no significant complications. The
patient may complain of a mild burning sensation in urine or mild blood in the urine
both of which are self-limited.
Post

No special care is needed after the
procedure.
